My childhood was marked by a lack of boundaries, excessive punishments, and a lack of focus on my safety, creating an environment where I was vulnerable to abuse. As a mother now, I can’t fathom how I was exposed to such circumstances. Even at the young age of 6, I remember hoarding food not out of concerns about my weight, but because it was the only aspect of my life I could control. Frequent relocations and a revolving door of caregivers added to the turmoil. Despite the turmoil, I presented a composed façade driven by the fear of my mother’s reactions if I ever divulged the challenges we faced.
The prolonged abuse I endured made it difficult for me to confide in anyone, perpetuating the cycle of mistreatment for several years. It began with being manipulated by this individual over an extended period, resulting in me feeling older than my years and believing that I was understood. At the time, I didn’t recognise the harm or exploitation; instead, I felt a sense of care from this person. Reflecting on those experiences now, I realise the depth of the wrongs committed against me, which have profoundly impacted my life and will unfortunately continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I won’t delve into the specifics of what I suffered as it’s not something anyone should have to read about; this is about fostering a sense of unity and understanding among those who have gone through similar ordeals.
For years, I suppressed my trauma, but a series of flashbacks resurfaced following an outburst from my mother, leading to a realisation of the lasting effects of my trauma in my 20s. An operation in my private area, resulting in bruising and swelling, left me deeply distressed and averse to intimacy. Even taking a bath, once a source of comfort, became an emotional and distressing experience. These were undoubtedly some of the most challenging times I’ve faced, and I had to navigate them alone because I was too ashamed to seek help. Suffering in silence… This was also the year when another equally traumatic event transpired, completely altering my world. I will share more about that in a separate blog.
I am still in therapy for this and will continue until the day comes when I no longer need to talk about this ordeal. If I could encourage anyone to seek help, especially through therapy, I would strongly recommend it. It can make a tremendous difference in your healing journey.
